Monday - Collect article of the week homework from over the weekend. DO NOW on essential question from our new short story in our rite of passage unit, "Shaving." Whole class discussion on essential question. Begin reading "Shaving" as a class. Group reading questions.
Tuesday - Continue with group reading questions from "Shaving." Once each group has received each set of questions, we will come back together as a class to review our answers and see the similarities and differences in each of the groups. If time allows, we will look at the song "100 Years" and look for similar themes/rite of passage message found in our last song "Circles." HW - In a complete paragraph, write about something that helps to motivate you. If can be an object, a person, song, poem, etc. Describe, in detail, how this person/thing motivates you and what about it makes it so special to you. Wednesday/Thursday - In partners, review last night's homework and share out what you wrote about. Class discussion on motivation and internal drive. Students will be given the poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling. As a class, we will read the poem aloud and break it down - much like we did with the song lyrics. HW - Choose a song that has a rite of passage/growing up theme to it. Print out the lyrics and bring them in to class tomorrow. In tomorrow's class you are going to exchange lyrics with another student and "teach" them what the song is really about. Friday - Partner song analysis. Share out toward the end of the class. Introduction to our final piece of the rite of passage unit: the movie Rudy.
