Tuesday - Pass out literary elements notes and have students fill out the worksheet as we go through a PowerPoint. Discuss literary elements and answer any questions. These literary elements will count as the students' first vocabulary words. Annotation review with examples.
HW - Review literary elements vocabulary. You never know when a quiz may pop up! Read and annotate short story. Wednesday/Thursday - DO NOW at the start of class.. Whole class discussion on DO NOW and last night's homework. Read Anton Chekhov's "The Bet." Students will annotate as the teacher reads aloud. Pass out close reading worksheet and have students begin by working with a partner. Exit slip on a major theme from the story. HW - Finish up worksheet for homework. Continue to study literary elements. Friday, Sep. 9 - Check homework. DO NOW on board. Discuss. Go over worksheet as a class. Transition to "theme." Workshop on "finding the theme" and have students "brain dump" all the possible themes for "The Bet." HW - 2 paragraph journal entry in the point-of-view of the laywer. Students may choose any part of the story to write on.
