Tuesday - DO NOW on setting of the play. Spatial/visual activity where the students create their interpretation of the play's opening scene. Look at similarities and differences between the students' interpretations. Exit slip on the Youngers living in such tight quarters. Continue reading, if time. HW - Read to page 40 and finish up apartment activity. Wednesday- Read background information on Lorraine Hansberry and answer questions in the packet. Students will hang up their drawing from yesterday Pass out vocabulary words for each Act. Continue reading. Gallery walk at the end. Friday - Review Scene I. Direct vs. indirect characterization of the five main characters thus far. Work time. Share out as a class. Begin Scene II. Assign parts and have students read aloud. Tuesday - Work day in computer lab for our final rites of passage paper. The students will now have their graphic organizers completed, an exemplar essay to model after, and a guiding rubric.
Wednesday - First draft due. Peer edit papers. Additional computer lab time to make adjustments to papers. Final draft will be due on Friday. Friday - .Hand in final drafts. Begin A Raisin in the Sun unit. DO NOW on ultimate goal for life. Read "Harlem" by Langston Hughes. Reading questions with a partner. Discuss. Exit slip on a prediction for the book. Monday - Continue watching Rudy and filling out viewing question sheet.
HOMEWORK - Read and annotate "By the Waters of Babylon" Tuesday - Short reading quiz on last night's reading. Share out discussion question from the last question of the reading quiz. Continue watching Rudy. Wednesday - Students will be given the final essay assignment for our rites of passage unit. Although we will not begin the writing process just yet, the students will be aware of what they should be looking for as they continue watching Rudy. Friday - Finish movie and begin outline for essay. Monday - Finding rites of passage within famous song lyrics. Partner analysis activity. DO NOW on an essential question from our next rite of passage story: "Shaving." Begin reading "Shaving."
HOMEWORK - Finish reading and annotating "Shaving." Tuesday - Close reading questions on "Shaving." Students will move around the room to different stations and answer questions based on their reading. Review questions as a whole class. "What motivates you?" one-page paper. HOMEWORK - One-page paper due on Thursday. Wednesday - Share out one-page paper from homework. Read Rudyard Kipling's poem, "If." Discuss and break down poem, stanza by stanza. Begin last part of our rites of passage unit, Rudy. Friday - Answer movie questions as we watch the ultimate rite of passage movie, Rudy. Rite of passage essay will be coming up after we finish the movie. Monday - Begin Rites of Passage Unit. Brain dump on the board of all that we currently know about rites of passage. Note taking on the three phases of a rite of passage. Student experiences with rites of passage in their journals. Share out. Introduce the first reading from the unit: "Through the Tunnel."
HOMEWORK - Read and annotate "Through the Tunnel." Tuesday - DO NOW: Identify the three phases of the rite of passage within the short story. After reading group analysis questions. Work in groups and then share out and discuss as a full class. Identifying/creating atmosphere through a case study of "Through the Tunnel." Create a clear atmosphere with strong imagery in two paragraphs. HOMEWORK - Complete atmosphere/imagery paragraphs. Wednesday - NO SCHOOL. Friday - DO NOW: Write down at least 3 formal rites of passage that you are aware of. Looking at taboo rites from around the world. Identify the three phases for each of the YouTube clips we watch. Students will then create their own rite of passage and three phases. HOMEWORK - Complete personal rite of passage. Research another rite of passage from a part of the world that we have yet to see in class. Print out the article, and then write a 1-2 paragraph summary on the rite of passage and what it entails. We will share these out next class. Finish creating your own rite of passage. Monday - DO NOW on an essential question from "Luck." Review homework questions from over the weekend. Introduce associative tool for our literary elements vocabulary quiz which will be on Wednesday.
Tuesday - Introduce the students to a reading strategy called "Say Something." The students will then put the reading strategy to work while they read in groups to read "The Superman." After reading discussion. Begin testimony activity. Share out, if time. Wednesday - Literary elements quiz. The students will be asked to read a short story, identify the elements of fiction within it, and define some vocabulary words from their note sheet. Utilize classroom text for the next short story. Friday - Pass out first SAT vocabulary packet of the year. The students will have two weeks to complete the packet and study the vocab words. There will be a quiz on the words in exactly two weeks (Quiz = September 29th). Article of the Week (AOW). The students will read a current events article, identify rhetorical devices within it, and then discuss and respond to questions from the text. HOMEWORK - Complete AOW over the weekend, if needed. Tuesday - Turn in writing diagnostics from over the weekend. Grade reading diagnostics as a class. Literary elements review and PowerPoint. Specific goals for the year.
Wednesday - Read and annotate "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov. Analysis questions in groups, along with literary elements work. Discuss as a full class. HOMEWORK - Choose four questions from "The Bet" question worksheet and answer each in a paragraph. Friday - DO NOW: What is the overarching theme of "The Bet"? Come up with the theme and give a detailed explanation. Share out and discuss on the board. Review homework and debrief on "The Bet." Transition to "Luck" by Mark Twain. Introduce new close reading analysis worksheet (we will use this all year). Begin reading "Luck." HOMEWORK - Close reading questions will be due on Monday. Wednesday - First day of school! We will introduce ourselves, go over the syllabus, discuss the year's schedule, and pass out a short questionnaire.
Thursday - First writing diagnostic of the year. Friday - Introduce a recurring assignment throughout the year: article of the week. Work in small groups and discuss as a class. HOMEWORK - Student introduction letter due on Tuesday. Monday - Chapters 9-12 are due from over the weekend. Review in small groups and then go over the chapters as a class. Read China connection article. Go over the rest of the week and the following week's schedule.
HW - Read chapter 13 for tomorrow's class. Tuesday - DO NOW on chapter 13. Caste grouping activity. At this point, the students should be able to distinguish one caste from another and all their characteristics. Go through each caste and have groups present. Vocabulary work time. HW - Read chapters 14-15 for Thursday's class. Thursday - DO NOW on chapters 14-15. Introduce motif mountain. Have students create two mountains for two different motifs. HW - End of the book due on Friday. Friday - Chapters 16-18 due (end of the book). DO NOW: Rate the book and the ending. Creating Socratic Seminar questions for Monday. Hypnopaedia article. Discuss as a class. Monday - NO SCHOOL.
Tuesday - Chapters 4-5 due. Review chapters through reading questions and vocabulary. The vocabulary words will be on the final. Please keep these in a safe place so you can study. In-class FRJ for chapters 3-5. Share out as a class. HW - Read chapters 6-7 with quote worksheet for Thursday's class. Thursday - The students had to meet with guidance last week so today we will be in the computer lab to complete the webquest. The students will work in pairs to answer questions from the internet that directly relates to the book. Go over answers, if time. HW - Complete webquest if not finished. Read chapter 8 for tomorrow's class with quote worksheet. Friday - Go over webquest answers. Review chapter 8 through student responses and close reading questions. Share out as a class.
