Monday - Review reading questions from the beginning of The Old Man and the Sea. Looking at life's essentials and how our lives compare to that of Santiago's. Group work and class discussion. Pass out viewing guide for our paired movie, The Pursuit of Happyness.
Tuesday/Wednesday - Read at the beginning of class. Pass out reading quotation worksheet for pages 40-90. The reading and questions will be due next Monday. Pass out vocabulary words and go through each. Students will be given an organizer. What makes a hero discussion. Is Santiago a hero? Discuss. Thursday - DO NOW: How do we know the age of Santiago? Read. Characterization work with a partner. Looking up quotations from the book that support their character's descriptions. Share out. Continue watching movie. Friday - Article of the week. Reminder: reading and questions are due on Monday!

Monday/Tuesday - Midterms. Good luck!
Wednesday - Today is a shortened class due to the half day. Review midterms exam. Journal entry - what is something that you had to work extremely hard for, but you'd do it all over again because of what you learned/earned? Look ahead to the next couple of weeks. Thursday - Anticipation guide for our new book, The Old Man and the Sea. Move around the class and debate. Begin reading as a class. Friday - PowerPoint and note taking. Personal responses to essential questions in packet. Continue reading and answering questions. HW - Read pages 1-36 for Monday and answer question packet. Study/review for midterm. Work on review packet. Come see Mr. Fuller with any questions/concerns before the examination.
Monday - Continue looking at essays on thisibelieve.org. Have students choose their topic for their essay. The students will work on their essays during the next two class periods.
Tuesday/Wednesday - Computer lab to work on essays. The students will have two class periods to work on the essays. Friday - Students will peer review their "This I Believe" essays with a partner. Final essays will be due on Tuesday. Midterm packet will also be passed out. Tuesday/Wednesday - Begin "This I Believe" writing unit. Begin class with interactive "What Do You Think?" activity. Students will give their beliefs on 15 different statements. The students will move around the room and share thier thoughts. After discussing, the students will choose the three statements that mean the most to them and write a detailed paragraph on each.
Thursday - DO NOW: What is a personal belief? How does a personal belief come to be for a person? What I Learned from Charlie Brown activity. Share out as the students feel comfortable. Choosing favorite personal beliefs from a list. Think-pair-share about student choices. Exit slip: What is one personal belief that you wholeheartedly believe in? Why? Friday - Revisit exit slip from previous class. Five Belief Topics activity. Partner work. Two belief statement worksheet. Students will fill out independently. Listen to first podcast. |
