Thursday - Quote identification worksheet with a partner. Share out. Continue with reading time and our reading schedule. Field any questions that the students may have. Catch up with movie.
Friday - Read the poem, "To a Mouse." The students will re-create the poem through a structured activity. Share out once completed. Continue with our reading and our watching of the movie.
Monday - Reading of chapter 2 due. Review reading and discuss chapter. Great Depression packet work. Reading time. Movie, if time.
Tuesday/Wednesday - Comparison poem for Of Mice and Men - "A Time to Talk" by Robert Frost. Discuss and share out. Vocabulary work time. Continue reading and watch movie.
Thursday - DO NOW: Which character is your favorite thus far? Why? Characterization chart work for Lennie and George. What are idioms? Find two within chapters 1-2. Reading and movie time.
Friday - Chapter 3 due. DO NOW to begin class. Discuss chapters 1-3 as a class. Reading and movie time to finish up the week.
Monday - Unit test for Farewell to Manzanar. The students had the two previous classes as review, so they should be ready to go. The test should take the whole period.
Tuesday/Wednesday - Begin our last unit of the year: Of Mice and Men. Anticipation guide to begin the unit. Students will respond to essential questions within the unit and debate out their thoughts. Pass out books and give the students the reading schedule. Begin reading as a class.
Thursday - Today we will focus on the theme of friendship within this unit. What makes a "good friend"? Friendship traits activity. Introduce Great Depression packet that the students will work on over the unit. Students will be given 15 minutes to begin working on the packet. Reading time to end class.
Friday - End of chapter 1 due. "My American Dream" worksheet. How does the American Dream connect to Lennie and George? Watch the beginning of the movie. Reading time to end class. Chapter 2 will be due on Monday.
Monday - Review reading questions for chapters 12-17. PowerPoint with photos of the actual Manzanar Internment Camp. Journal response to the photos. Time to read to end the class.
Tuesday/Wednesday - DO NOW: Write down everything you know about dropping the atomic bomb to end WWII. Reading of historical narratives - Japanese vs. American experiences. Journal response. Review chapters 18-22. Finish reading the book.
Thursday - Today is our first test review day for our final test on Monday. Chapter by chapter group review activity. Share out and discuss. Vocabulary review.
Friday - Last review day before our test on Monday. Today we will review by playing a review game that will help the students prepare for Monday. Bonus points will be available!
