Monday - Continue with The Pursuit of Happyness. Students will continue filling out their graphic organizers and plan their essays.
Tuesday - NO RED INK for the first 15 minutes of class. Finish movie, if needed. Create essay outline and paragraphs. Conclusion work. Wednesday/Thursday - Work day in computer lab. Friday - Last day to work on essay in computer lab. Peer edit, if complete. Essay will be due on Monday. Midterms are Monday - Wednesday. GOOD LUCK!
Thursday - Begin our last part of The Old Man and the Sea unit: the code hero essay. We will compare the code hero characteristics from the book to the famous Will Smith movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. Pass out writing planner and outline, which will be completed as the students watch the film. Begin watching the movie. Friday - Continue watching the movie and working on our writing planner/outline. Monday - NO SCHOOL.
Tuesday - End of book, along with reading questions, is due. Review reading questions. End of book PowerPoint. Pass out midterm essay question. Allow students time to begin brainstorming and outlining essay. Wednesday - Go over entire midterm and what the structure will be. Pass out the short story that will be on the midterm. Review literary elements from the beginning of the year. Students will be given time to start reading and annotating the short story. They can use this annotated copy of the story on the actual midterm. Thursday - Entire class will be devoted to answering questions and preparing for the midterm. Friday - MIDTERMS BEGIN - GOOD LUCK! Monday - PowerPoint and note taking. Personal responses to essential questions in packet. Continue reading and use "Say Something" reading strategy as a class. Review pages 1-36 and collect the homework questions. Pass out new question packet. Journal: Do you consider Santiago to be a success or failure? Find a quote and write a well organized paragraph.
HW - Pages 37-80 due on 1/11 with completed questions. Tuesday - Read for the first 15 minutes of class. Comparing our way of life to Santiago and Manolin. What similarities do we have? How about our differences? Continue reading as a class. Stop at page 17 (if not already there) and have a discussion on what qualities are found in a hero or someone that we look up to. Write down in our journals and then discuss. Pass out the vocabulary words that will be on the midterm. HW - Pages 37-80 due on 1/11 with completed questions. Wednesday/Thursday - Read for the first 15 minutes of class. Possible quiz on the reading??? Go over 37-80 and collect homework questions. Characterization activity for Santiago and Manolin. Students will go up to the board and write down the similarities and differences, as well as quotes for support. Friday - DO NOW: Create a timeline of the eight most important events within the book so far. Share out. What is style? Look at Hemingway's life and his style. Choose two quotes that you think best illustrate his style. Exit slip: Do you enjoy Hemingway's writing style? Explain why or why not. Pass out final reading questions, which will be due with the end of the book on Tuesday 11/16. |
